3D-printing: Safety basics (do not skip this!)

In this blog post, we'll explore some of the key safety measures you should take before and while 3D printing to ensure that you're creating beautiful, accurate models without putting yourself or others at risk.

Whether you're a tabletop wargamer looking to create your own miniatures, or a designer looking to prototype your next big idea, 3D printing can be a powerful tool. However, as with any technology, it's important to take safety precautions when using a 3D printer. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the key safety measures you should take before and while 3D printing to ensure that you're creating beautiful, accurate models without putting yourself or others at risk.

  1. Proper lighting: Ensure that your 3D printing workspace is well-lit, so that you can clearly see the details of your prints and detect any potential problems early on. This will also help to prevent eye strain.
  2. Responsible behaviour: Always follow the safety instructions provided with your 3D printer and materials. This includes wearing appropriate protective gear, such as gloves and a mask, and keeping the area clean and well-ventilated.
  3. Reading safety instructions: Make sure to read and understand the safety instructions that come with your 3D printer, resin and any other equipment you use. This will help you to avoid any accidents or mishaps.
  4. Not making it available for children in the household: Keep your 3D printing workspace away from children and pets, as the materials and equipment used in 3D printing can be dangerous if handled improperly. This also includes being aware of the toxic fumes produced during printing and making sure that the space is well ventilated.
  5. Proper ventilation: Make sure to have proper ventilation in your 3D printing workspace, as the fumes produced by some resins can be harmful if inhaled. This can be done by installing an exhaust fan or by keeping a window open.
  6. Cleaning: Clean your equipment, tools and work area regularly to prevent build-up of resin and other materials which can be hazardous to your health and safety.
  7. Preparing a designated area: Set up a designated area for your 3D printing where you can store your equipment and materials safely. Keep the area free of clutter and only use it for 3D printing to minimize the risk of accident.
  8. Fire prevention: Keep a fire extinguisher or fire blanket nearby in case of an emergency. Resin is flammable and should be handled with care.
  9. Proper disposal: Always properly dispose of any waste materials, such as used resin or failed prints, to minimize the risk of accident or injury.
